Could this behavior be from breaking his pacifier?

it could be a combination of both. The paci is obviously a soothing/comforting thing to a little one and if you take it away w/o replacing the soothing/comforting with something else that can cause problems in some kids. But also having daddy not come home on his normal time can be the issue as well, it is hard to tell. If he is wanting you to sleep with him then he is needing comforting it sounds like.
