What is an electoral vote? explain...?

i'm confused my teacher told me its just the vote from a person from the electoral college... so i said "whats the point in voting then because it does not matter which candidate wins the popular vote" in fact i even asked "what if hypothetically nobody voted" and his answer was "then the electoral college would still vote (for us basically)" im really confused..
