GH...Why does everyone forget about the awful things that the characters do?

Is it just GH or is it all soaps? We are talking more than just cheating and betrayal, we are talking murder, , holding hundreds of people hostage in a hotel, framing someone. I don't get how Alexis can get past Jerry poisoning her own nephew. That would never happen in real life.
