Does a Jewish temple need a RABBI to be a true temple?

IJR understands that a RABBI is not a man of the cloth, like a Priest or Minister, and that any Jewish Adult (only males in Orthodox congregations) may lead the service. So, does this mean a Temple doesn't need to hire a RABBI, or is there some other function that only a certified RABBI can perform? IJR is only trying to understand the Jewish faith better, and doesn't mean to be insulting. If IJR is wrong, please post the correct information. Thanks.
